Both negatively and positively depending on the quality and quantity of the communication. If the team communicates well this will increase its effectiveness, if the team does not communicate well chances are that the teams productivity and effectiveness will not be as high.
As Maria has already posted, there can be positive and negative effects on the group. A negative communication could be a bad thing, however, it might be the catalyst to improve group communications.
Team effectiveness is dependent upon team communication. The quality of the team's work, to a large extent, depends upon the quality of the information shared. The ability of team members to understand and communicate information enables them to work together collaboratively.
Communication effects all team environments. In police work, it causes actual riots! Ever had a partner who created violence at a family fight after the police arrived?
Nope...but have worked with other officers that every stop or arrest turned into a confrontation....amazing, 90% of this job is being able to communicate and listen.
The ability to communicate effectively to deescalate a situation is a must have in today's law enforcement profession, not only because of this litigious society, but increased officer safety concerns.
I have worked with several of these partners. Even though I wasn't a "D" in our testing . I would often find myself taking controll of calls just to make sure some of the idiots that I worked with wouldin't have the chance to escalate the calls. This is an example when there is very little communication on the police team.
Team work and communication with in the team is imperative for success. We have all worked on at least a two person team in police work. The mention of working with a partner in the police world is a great example of why communication is important. If you have the mis-fortune of working with an idiot who wants to always escalte a call. That is when your communication skills become very important. I know it doesn't happen often, but every know and then you get a good partner and everything clicks. You know it's right if you can communicate without saying a word. That would be when you both know it's time to take care of business.
